Spillemyndigheden – the Danish gambling regulator, petitioned the country Internet Service Providers and requested them to block citizens’ access to a total of 25 gambling sites providing services on the territory of the country without holding the necessary permissions. Spillemyndigheden’ decision was supported by the Copenhagen City Court.
As many as 10 of the blocked sites are casino-oriented. The remaining 15 are skin gambling websites. In “skin gambling”, players exchange different goods for virtual gambling chips. Skins are considered a common “currency” to bet on games of chance. While at traditional online casinos players’ funds are converted into chips, in skin gambling sites players deposit their skins on a game and the skin value is converted into coins.
As far as the blocked online casino sites are concerned, they are mainly Curacao licensees. The serial troublemaker 1xBet is among the restricted ones. The other blacklisted casinos are Nordi Casino, OrientXpress Casino, La Fiesta Casino, Ramses Gold Casino, Casino Napoli, Mr. James Casino, Ph. Casino, as well as two domains for the Cashpot casino site.
Birgitte Sand, the Spillemyndigheden Director, commented on the matter and said that authorities’ objective was to continue the crackdown on unlicensed sites with the aim of protecting both players and licensed gaming providers. Ms. Sand also emphasised the importance of identifying illegal skin betting sites where minors have no issues partaking in games of chance.
“We will continue our efforts to tackle illegal gambling and look carefully for the skin betting sites, especially, since they often involve children playing computer games that can suddenly evolve into gambling… Therefore, we are also looking at other methods to get rid of these illegal pages, while simultaneously continuing to monitor unlicensed betting and gaming sites targeting Denmark.”-Sand explained.
