Catchy fantasy world design

Fortunately, Rage’s design does look appealing. Rage is set in a fantasy world, in which about four medieval-looking characters call the shots. NetEnt does not provide much context, so exactly what their backstories are and what kind of fantasy world Rage is about is not entirely clear. However, the modern cartoon drawing style and funny design of the 4 characters do make for an appealing design.

While playing Rage, an adventurous and entertaining soundtrack can be heard, which of course completely fits the theme of the slot machine.

How does the Rage slot machine work?

The dimensions of the playing field of Rage are remarkably unconventional. Indeed, the 5 reels of the playing field consist of 2-2-4-4-4 symbols, to which 256 ways to win are linked.

Winning is done by spinning the same symbols from the 1st reel on at least 3 adjacent reels. This works slightly differently with premium pay symbols (the 4 characters). For a winning combination, you also need the same symbols on the first 2 reels. However, the third symbol does not have to land on reel 3, but may also do so on reel 4 or 5.

The 256 different ways provide medium to high volatility in Rage, although we felt we very rarely won a prize while playing.

What about wagering? You can play at almost all online casinos with a minimum bet of $0.25 and a maximum bet of $250. Then again, with only 1,860 times your bet, the maximum prize to be won is very disappointing. Although it felt lower, Rage’s RTP is 96.07% according to NetEnt.

Three features largely determine game play in Rage. We are talking about mega symbols, the respins feature and the free spins feature. Important to note here is that wilds can only occur in the free spins feature in Rage.

Mega symbols

On reels 1 and 2, premium pay symbols and scatters can land as 2×2 mega symbols. The same goes for the combined symbol, which is actually a mega symbol consisting of 2 or 4 different premium pay symbols.

Respins feature

Any winning combination that includes a mega symbol triggers the respins feature. This applies to both the base game and the free spins feature of Rage. In this respins feature, the goal is to spin at least 1 symbol on the playfield that corresponds to the mega symbol each time. As long as that is the case, you will continue to receive new respins continuously.

To activate the free spins feature of Rage, you must first spin a mega scatter symbol on reels 1 and 2. This in fact triggers the scatter mini game, in which you, the player, get the opportunity to spin scatters in addition. During the scatter mini game, the mega scatter remains fixed at its position and the other reels (reels 3, 4 and 5) spin again. Only scatters and blank symbols can then land on these reels.

At the end of the scatter mini game, the game takes stock by adding up all the spun scatters. In doing so, it counts a mega scatter symbol as 4 separate scatters. The number of free spins you receive is equal to the total number of scatters you have spun.

An important difference from the base game is that symbols that match the mega symbol during the respins feature can turn into sticky wilds at any time. That means during Rage’s free spins feature, those wilds remain present on the playfield for the remaining duration of the feature.

What do we think?

Is Rage a success or not? What is beyond question is that the slot’s title is unfortunate.

Also, the game’s statistics – apart from the wide betting options – are pretty disappointing. On top of that, in our opinion, it is too difficult to make winning combinations because you are obliged to include reels 1 and 2. It’s not often that you spin an identical symbol on the first 2 reels, so actually having a winning spin depends almost entirely on spinning a mega symbol.

However, we do have to compliment NetEnt for the design of Rage.
