Casino Welcome Bonuses in Spain Capped at €100
Posted at 21 February 2020
On Monday, February 17th, the Spanish Minister of Consumer Affairs Alberto Garzón revealed authorities’ intentions for limiting the welcome bonuses online casinos offer. This is part of their plan to curb excessive gambling, as Spanish lawmakers consider the welcome packages one of the main reasons for new casino sign-ups. That’s why the welcome bonuses for Spanish players will be capped at €100.
Minister Garzón went on to say that apart from attracting new players, the bonuses also attract players fighting problem gambling issues and minors who are yet to realize the harms online gambling may cause. Garzon confirmed that the new regulation would be included in the Royal Decree Project.
The welcome bonus limit is just one of the restrictions the Spanish Government is going to impose. Earlier this year, the authorities updated the gambling advertisement regulations and casino operators are allowed to advertise their services only between 1am and 5am. In addition, a Spanish consumer right agency called for a complete ban on credit card deposits. Such a measure comes into force in the UK in April 2020.
Surveys suggest that Spain is one of the EU countries with the lowest problem gambling rates. Javier Molinera, the head of the Gambling and Betting Control Service of the National Police, has recently busted the myth that minors have easy access to online casino games. According to him, operators prefer to save themselves the hefty financial penalties for underage gambling rather than taking the pocket money of a teenager.
