The Netherlands' regulatory authority (KSA) has issued a warning to casino operators serving Dutch players. The country that has opened its online gambling market in 2021, has set strict rules regarding responsible gambling and this time around, the reason for the warning is the autoplay feature. The latter is prohibited in the Netherlands, but KSA received a report from a player who played at an undisclosed casino and was able to use the autoplay function.
According to the report, the operator that violated the rules, allowed players to buy spins and play them at a fast pace (autoplay). What's more, the game kept restarting until the spins players bought were used up.
The investigation the KSA carried proved that there were at least three video slots at this casino that allowed an autoplay. The autoplay option at the casino in question is no longer available and the above-mentioned three slots have been removed from the game catalog. If the license holder continues the bad practice, it will have to pay EUR300,000 fine.
What makes the violation so serious is the presumption that a player must be able to make a careful decision whether they want to push the spin button once again or exit the game. According to the KSA officials, the autoplay option is a threat for players as they lose control over the gameplay and risk developing gambling addiction problems.
The Netherlands opened its online gambling market to international operators in October 2021 and since then, the market has been rapidly expanding with more operators are expected to apply this year. The KSA has established strict rules and often reminds license holders to follow the responsible gambling, advertising and anti-money laundering practices and imposes tough penalties to violators and especially repeats offenders.
